We made two zodiac trips today to sites of cultural and historical interest. At Gravneset we saw the graveyard of whalers who were buried under the rocks as the ground is permanently frozen. Then to Virgohamna, where the Swedish explorer Andree built and launched an ill-fated hydrogen balloon flight over the North Pole in 1896-7. At Smeerenburg (Blubber Town) we explored the remains of a large whaling community started here in 1610. An Arctic Fox (blue fox) scampered around the beach oblivious to our presence.
